Saskatchewan’s first Net Zero multi-unit residential building breaks ground

May 18, 2020

Big Block Construction is leading the way to the future of energy-efficient, sustainable housing in Saskatchewan with the province’s first Net Zero multi-unit residential building — Willowview Heights in the Willowgrove neighbourhood of Saskatoon will feature 12 Net Zero units. One of only seven such projects in a national initiative coordinated by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, the building will provide direction to the National Building Code of Canada.

In total, the townhouse development will include 72 units, including 36 three-bedroom homes and 36 two-bedroom homes. In addition to the 12 Net Zero units, six will be designated as affordable homes for persons with intellectual disabilities and delivered through a partnership between the National Affordable Housing Corporation and Innovative Residential. People with intellectual disabilities often face discrimination and marginalization when it comes to accessing housing; Willowview Heights will be part of the solution.

The property will complement neighbouring houses through its exterior features, materials and colours, and we will be making every effort to minimize disruptions throughout the construction process. As a modular-built project, construction materials and supply deliveries are reduced by up to 70% and overall build time is reduced by up to 50% compared to traditional building methods.

Partners on this project include the City of Saskatoon, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association and the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association, NRCan, CMHC, Saskatchewan New Home Warranty Program, SaskEnergy, Sun Ridge Residential, Grandeur Housing, the National Affordable Housing Corporation, and Innovative Residential.
